A replacement LED should make the room work better, not merely fit the old socket. Start with brightness, the fitting and the task. Then check colour, beam angle and compatibility with any dimmer. A low wattage is useful only if the light still does its job.
Take the old globe details, not just its wattage
Before shopping, record the cap type, voltage, physical size and any restrictions printed on the fitting or its instructions. Note whether the light is directional, whether it is enclosed and whether it is controlled by a dimmer. A matching cap does not establish that a replacement is suitable for every fitting.
The Australian Government Energy Rating guidance recommends comparing brightness in lumens rather than using old incandescent or halogen watts as the buying target. Watts describe electrical input; lumens describe light output. A directional lamp also needs an appropriate beam angle, so a bright narrow spotlight is not interchangeable with broad room lighting.
Separate brightness, colour and colour rendering
Colour temperature describes the appearance of the light, not its brightness. Lower Kelvin values look warmer; higher values look cooler. Compare a sample in the actual room if possible, including against existing lights. Colour rendering is another attribute: it describes how colours appear under that light and should not be confused with colour temperature.
Check the control as well as the globe
A lamp marked dimmable is not a promise that it works with every existing dimmer or driver. Check the manufacturers’ compatibility information. Do not treat flicker, buzzing or poor low-level dimming as a reason to alter wiring yourself. Replacement of fixed electrical components belongs with an appropriately licensed electrician.
Prioritise without promising a payback
Begin with inefficient lamps used for long periods. The result depends on old and new input power, hours of use, purchase and installation cost, and your electricity tariff. Government examples are comparisons, not a guaranteed household saving. Use task lighting and daylight where useful, but account for glare and heat from sunlight rather than assuming every brighter room is more efficient.
Read the packaging as a set of requirements
For a general room globe, start with the light output you already find comfortable. If the old globe lists only watts, use Energy Rating’s comparison table for that lamp technology rather than an arbitrary “equivalent wattage” rule. Then compare the actual lumens printed on the replacement. Lumens per watt describes efficiency, but it does not tell you whether the beam reaches your desk or whether the globe fits under a shade.
- Cap and voltage: match the existing specification; do not choose an adaptor to work around uncertainty.
- Size and fitting: check clearance and whether the manufacturer permits use in an enclosed fitting. A physically smaller globe is not automatically suitable.
- Colour temperature: choose the appearance you want for that room, not the highest number. Keep neighbouring lamps consistent if mismatched whites would bother you.
- Colour rendering: consider this separately for food preparation, clothing and other tasks where recognising colours matters.
- Beam angle: a focused beam can suit a task or feature; broader coverage can suit ambient lighting. Total light output alone cannot describe the pattern.
Resolve dimmer and downlight uncertainty before buying a pack
Write down the dimmer model if it can be identified without removing covers, and ask the supplier to check it against the proposed lamp. Where a transformer or LED driver is involved, its compatibility also matters. “LED”, “dimmable” and “same socket” answer different questions. If a compatibility list is unavailable, get advice rather than treating the purchase as a wiring experiment.
Separate replacing a manufacturer-designated, user-replaceable globe from changing a fitting, wall dimmer, driver or fixed wiring. The Queensland Electrical Safety Office says to use a licensed electrician for electrical work, including light switches and light fittings. That is Queensland guidance; check your own state or territory’s regulator for local requirements. This guide does not authorise electrical work. If the fitting is damaged, the globe is stuck, or access is unsafe, stop and get professional help.
For a permitted routine globe change, follow the fitting and lamp instructions, switch it off, unplug a portable lamp and allow it to cool. Do not remove electrical covers or modify a fitting. An integrated LED fitting may not have a user-replaceable globe at all. In a rental, raise changes to fixed fittings with the property manager rather than commissioning an unapproved alteration.
Make a small trial answer the room question
Our suggested buying method is to trial one suitable globe before replacing a whole room. This is a checklist, not a report of product testing. Check the room after dark as well as in daylight: can you read comfortably, are work surfaces lit, and does the shade produce glare? If dimming is supported, check the normal operating range using the existing controls. Stop using the product and seek advice if it behaves abnormally; do not attempt an electrical repair.
Keep the packaging and receipt while checking suitability and the retailer’s return conditions. A long rated lifetime on the box is not a promise of that exact lifetime in your fitting. Likewise, choosing an especially bright globe and then using more lamps can undermine the reason for upgrading.
Consider this illustrative living-room decision, not a tested installation: the ceiling light is comfortable for conversation, but a reading chair remains poorly lit. Replacing every globe with a brighter version is not the only option. First identify whether the reader needs light on the page rather than across the whole room. A suitable task lamp may address that need while leaving the background lighting comfortable. Check its position from the seated reader’s viewpoint, including reflections and whether the shade hides the light source. A second illustrative case is a kitchen spotlight that makes a bright patch but leaves the nearby preparation area dark. Record the existing beam angle and the area that needs coverage. A replacement with similar lumens but a different beam can distribute light differently; a higher lumen number alone does not resolve that mismatch. Use the packaging’s beam illustration and discuss the fitting position with the supplier. If improving coverage requires relocating or adding fixed fittings, request an electrician’s assessment instead of treating it as a globe-only purchase.
Turn a disappointing trial into a specific question. If the light looks too cool beside neighbouring lamps, compare colour-temperature labels. If food or fabric colours look wrong despite an acceptable white tone, compare colour-rendering information separately. If the room feels dark while the globe itself is glaring, consider the shade and distribution rather than immediately buying more power. These observations help narrow a buying decision; they are not a diagnosis of an electrical fault. Flickering, buzzing or other abnormal operation belongs in a compatibility or safety enquiry, not repeated experimentation with wiring.
For that enquiry, prepare the lamp model, accessible fitting details, dimmer model if safely visible, and a short description of when the problem was noticed. State whether the replacement was sold as dimmable and whether the manufacturer lists the existing control. Ask the supplier what documented combination is suitable, and ask the electrician whether any fixed component needs attention. Keep appearance preferences separate from safety concerns: returning an unsuitable colour is a purchasing matter, while a damaged fitting needs professional attention. Do not dismantle anything to complete the information sheet. An unanswered compatibility question is a reason to pause the bulk order.
Decide whether smart lighting actually helps
A simple LED and familiar wall switch may be all the household needs. Smart lamps add choices about network compatibility, hubs, standby power and who can operate the lights. Check whether the proposed product needs extra hardware and what happens when someone turns off its wall switch. Do not buy connected controls merely to replace a routine that already works.
Ask whether a timer, sensor or task lamp solves the specific problem, such as an unnecessarily lit empty room. Government lighting guidance warns that controls and lamps are not universally compatible. Daylight is useful, but opening blinds to reduce lighting demand can also introduce glare and heat; consider the whole room rather than lighting in isolation.
A purchase checklist you can take to the shop
- Photograph accessible lamp markings and record the room’s purpose.
- List cap, voltage, dimensions, fitting restrictions, desired lumens and beam angle.
- Choose colour temperature and consider colour rendering separately.
- Confirm dimmer and any driver compatibility with the manufacturer or supplier.
- Separate the globe purchase from any licensed installation quote.
- Trial a suitable unit before buying multiples, and retain purchase records.
- Prioritise long-used inefficient lights; leave already suitable LEDs alone unless there is a real problem.
To compare running costs, use the difference in lamp input power, realistic operating hours and the applicable usage rate from your bill. Installation and purchase costs belong in the decision too; a lower lighting load does not remove daily electricity supply charges. No fixed saving or payback period is promised here.
